The University of Calagry is a public university located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This page will cover the Kinesiology A building, which opened in 1962 and underwent an expansion in 1971. The fire alarm system was fully upgraded in 2020.

System Specifications (2020-present)[edit | edit source]

FACP[edit | edit source]

The building is protected by a Simplex 4100ES addressable fire alarm system. The panel is located in the main entrance vestibule, and is equipped with the InfoAlarm Command Center. The system runs Simplex’s IDNet addressable protocol, and is equipped with voice evacuation. The messages and/or tones are unknown at this time.

The system replaced a conventional, non-voice evac 4100ES due to that system being outdated.

Notification Appliances[edit | edit source]

All indoor notification appliances are Simplex “TrueAlert” 4906-9151 speaker/strobes (red, wall-mount).

For outdoor notification, there is a Simplex 4906-9105 weatherproof remote strobe (red, wall-mount) outside the main entrance.

All pull stations are Simplex 4099-9001 addressable single-action pull stations.

Automatic Detection Devices[edit | edit source]

There are Simplex “TrueAlarm” 4098-9714 addressable photoelectric smoke detectors throughout the building, mounted on 4098-9792 addressable bases.

EOLs[edit | edit source]

There are Simplex 2081-9040C end-of-line resistor plates on all signal circuits.

FACP[edit | edit source]

The building was protected by Edwards 1221T and Simplex 4100ES conventional fire alarm systems. The 4100ES was located in the main entrance vestibule and was equipped with InfoAlarm Command Center, and the 1221T was located in an electrical room. The system coding was continuous, as the notification appliances were fed off of the 1221T.

The 4100ES was installed in 2016 to monitor the initiating devices and due to addition of some detectors. The panel had a relay to trip the 1221T during an alarm.

This system unfortunately was replaced in 2020 with an addressable variant with voice evacuation, lasting a mere 58 years in service.

FACP Accessories[edit | edit source]

The 4100ES had a Simplex 4100-1293 printer module for logging the alarm events.

Annunciators[edit | edit source]

There is an Edwards 456 annunciator in the entrance, disconnected.

Notification Appliances[edit | edit source]

All notification appliances were Edwards “Adaptahorn” 360A vibrating horns (red, flush-mount, 12VAC). These were original in both wings.

The ones installed in the 1971 expansion had “FIRE HORN” on them. These were powered by the 1221T.

According to campus security, despite their age, these horns were very loud and were one of the best-working alarms on campus!

Most pull stations were the original first-generation Edwards 270-SPO conventional single-action pull stations. Variants up to third generation 270-SPO’s could be found as deficiency replacements.

Some areas had Simplex 2099-9754 conventional single-action pull stations as deficiency replacements.

Automatic Detection Devices[edit | edit source]

Not known, most likely Simplex 4098-9601 conventional photoelectric smoke detectors mounted on 4098-9788 bases.

There were Simplex 2081-9040C end-of-line resistor plates on each conventional zone.

The fire panel is located in the entrance of this building, and it was installed as the replacement panel, as it most likely replaced an Edwards 6500 or similar from the 1970s-1980s. The 6500 panel was upgraded to the 4100ES in 2016 due to code requiring more detectors in the pool area and ductwork, and the 6500 not having enough zones to fulfill that requirement, and due to the age of the panel. It is possible that there was an EST ESA2000 panel before then, though. However, since there were no building expansions, all of the notification appliances and pull stations from the 6500 system were left in place. Even though the Simplex 4100ES is addressable, the system is set up in a non-addressable manner. This system has NO troubles at all, and has been super reliable according to the campus security. <br>

-Very surprisingly, all of the notification appliances are original, for both the original part (1962) and 1971 expansion. They consist of Edwards "Adaptahorn" 360 (red) flush-mount horns, aka "Fire Horns", however, only the 1971 expansion's horns have FIRE HORN on them. These models are 20 volts DC. Despite the age of the horns, none have been replaced, all still in use! Most have the classic E shield logo on the label, specifically in the original part. The ones with the post-1964 logo can be found in the 1971 wing.  According to security, these horns are very loud and still working excellently. These are probably the longest-surviving notification appliances in Alberta.
