The Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre is a hospital located at 8440 112 Street NW, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The centre also houses the University of Alberta Hospital and the Stollery Children’s Hospital. The facility is owned and operated by Alberta Health Services. The building was built in 1981, and expanded in 1986. The fire alarm system was upgraded in 2008.

System Specifications (2008-present)[edit | edit source]

FACP[edit | edit source]

The building is protected by an Edwards EST3 addressable fire alarm system. This is a networked system with a total of 60 nodes; one node is located in the main entrance vestibule. The system runs EST’s Signature addressable protocol, and is equipped with voice-evacuation. The system is also configured for two-stage operation. The alert signal is 20BPM, and the alarm signal is 120BPM.

Annunciators[edit | edit source]

There is an Edwards EST3-LCDANN annunciator in the Stollery lobby, fitted with the LCDXL1 display.

Notification Appliances[edit | edit source]

Most notification appliances are the original Faraday 4070 single-stroke bells (10” gong).
The Heart Institute has Edwards MB10-24 motor bells (10” gong) mounted on Edwards 403-5A-R strobe plates (15cd). These bells can also be found remotely as deficiency replacements in the original wing.
There is a Faraday BT-SS single-stroke bell (10” gong) near Stollery as a deficiency replacement.

Voice Communication[edit | edit source]

There are Atlas Sound AP-15TU remote horn speakers in some areas.
There are Soundolier UHT-70C remote speakers throughout the upper floors.
There are Edwards “Genesis” GC-S7 remote speakers (white, ceiling-mount, no marking, 70V) throughout as deficiency replacements.
The Heart Institute has Edwards G4-S7 remote speakers (white, wall-mount, no marking, 70V).

Initiating Devices[edit | edit source]

Pull Stations[edit | edit source]

All pull stations are EST SIGA-270P addressable two-stage single-action pull stations.

Automatic Detection Devices[edit | edit source]

There are EST SIGA-PS addressable photoelectric smoke detectors throughout the building.
The elevator shafts have EST SIGA-HRS addressable 135°F fixed-temperature/rate-of-rise heat detectors.

Some areas have Edwards SIGA-PD addressable photoelectric smoke detectors as deficiency replacements.
All aforementioned detectors are mounted on EST SIGA-SB4 bases.
There are EST “SuperDuct” SIGA-SD addressable photoelectric duct smoke detectors on all air handling units.
There are VESDA aspirating smoke detection systems in some areas.

Modules[edit | edit source]

There are EST SIGA-CT1 addressable monitor modules supervising the sprinkler system’s tamper and flow switches.
There are EST SIGA-CR addressable relay modules serving various purposes.

EOLs[edit | edit source]

There are Edwards EOL-P1 end of line resistor plates on all signal and sprinkler circuits.

Sequence of Operations[edit | edit source]

The bells on this system are used for signaling. The speakers are used for emergency announcements. When the microphone on the panel is keyed, the bells are silenced, and automatically resound when an announcement concludes. Code Red announcements are made by on-site security, and will inform occupants of the fire location.

When an alarm is initiated, the system will sound the alert signal until a keyswitch is activated in a pull station, as the general alarm timer is disabled.
