The Olympic Oval is a multipurpose ice arena located at 288 Collegiate Blvd NW, Calgary, AB. It gets its name from its original purpose, which was to host the 1988 Winter Olympics. It is located on the campus of the University of Calgary, and has a speed skating track, along with 2 enclosed hockey surfaces. The system is very similar to Kinesiology B.

System Specifications

FACP

The building is protected by a Simplex 4100ES conventional fire alarm system. The panel is located next in the main lobby, next to the customer service desk. The system runs Simplex's MAPNET addressable protocol, and is equipped with voice-evacuation. The evacuation signal is a slow whoop tone, followed by a custom message with evacuation instructions.

The 4100ES replaced a Simplex 4100U in 2019, which in turn replaced the original Simplex 2120 in 2007.
The system is part of a campus-wide 4120 network.

Notification Appliances

Most audible notification appliances are Simplex “LifeAlarm” 2902-9734 speakers (beige, wall-mount).

The event area has Atlas Sound AP-30T high-output horn speakers (grey, 30W).

The seating bowl has Wheelock RSS-24MCW remote strobes (red, wall-mount) for visual signaling.

Initiating Devices

Pull Stations

All pull stations are Simplex 2099-9201 conventional single-action pull stations.

Automatic Detection Devices

There are Fenwal CPD-7051 conventional ionization smoke detectors in some areas.

Some areas have Simplex "TrueAlarm" 4098-9601 conventional photoelectric smoke detectors.

EOLs

There are Simplex 2081-9039C end of line resistor plates on all circuits.

Known Activation

January 16, 2012 - false activation. Building evacuated, and campus security ensured building was safe for re-occupancy. Alarm shut off after short while.

May 2013 - smoke detector in electrical room activated by minor smoke from an exhaust fan shorting out. Building was evacuated, and Calgary Fire Department responded, and confirmed everything was OK.
