CF Chinook Centre is a large shopping mall located at 6455 Macleod Trail, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It is the largest mall in the City of Calgary, and the second largest in Alberta. The mall houses three anchor stores, along with 250 other shops and services. The mall originally opened in 1960, and was expanded in 1960, 1980, 2000 and 2010. The mall was also renovated in 2000. The fire alarm system was installed in 2000.

System Specifications

FACP

The building is protected by an Edwards EST3 addressable fire alarm system. The system has over 50 nodes, and the main panel is located in the security office, located in the basement of the mall. The system runs EST’s Signature-series addressable protocol, and is configured for two-stage operation. The system is equipped with voice evacuation, with custom messages for both first stage and general alarm. First stage coding is a 20BPM vibrating bell tone, followed by a 120BPM (march time) bell tone in general alarm.

Annunciators

There are Edwards EST3-LCDANN annunciators located in several entrances, including Hudsons Bay. The first floor entrance to the police station has an Edwards EST3-6ANN annunciator.

Notification Appliances

Second Floor Corridor (1999)

Unless otherwise mentioned, all notification appliances are Edwards 965-1A-4RW remote speakers (white, ceiling-mount, 70V). There are Edwards 965-7A-4RW speaker/strobes (white, ceiling-mount, 70V, 15/75cd) for visual coverage. These are typically installed in this pattern: speaker, speaker, speaker/strobe. Portions of the building have Edwards “Integrity” 757-7A-SS70W speaker/strobes (white, wall-mount, 15/75cd) as deficiency replacements.

Main Floor Corridor (1999)

The south end of the building has Edwards 965-1A-4RW remote speakers (white, ceiling-mount). The north end of the building has Edwards 965-1A-8SW remote speakers (white, ceiling-mount). Some areas have Edwards 757-7A-SS70W speaker/strobes (white, wall-mount, 15/75cd). There is an Edwards 757-5A-SS70W speaker/strobe (white, wall-mount, 15cd) outside Hot Topic. Some areas have Edwards 757-1A-SS70W remote speakers (white, ceiling-mount) as deficiency replacements.

Initiating Devices

Pull Stations

All pull stations are EST SIGA-270P addressable two-stage single-action pull stations. Most of these are the original first-generation models, with the E shield. Deficiency replacements from all generations can be found throughout. The 2010 expansion has the GE EST variants, and the food court has the current generation.

Automatic Detection Devices

Some areas have EST SIGA-PD addressable photoelectric smoke detectors, mounted on SIGA-SB bases. Some other areas and elevator shafts have EST SIGA-PS addressable photoelectric smoke detectors.

Known Activations

In May 2022, a TikTok user pulled the pull station in the back exit of the Professional Tower as a prank. This obviously tripped the system into alarm, and so the mall was evacuated and CFD responded. The person who pulled it got away, but in October they came back and did it again. The pull station in the Centre Court was activated and the alarm sounded. They were caught and charged. Fire Alarmpedia is not responsible for this, and strictly condemns the user and their actions. NEVER pull a fire alarm unless there is a real fire emergency.
