Telus Convention Centre is a large convention centre located at 136 8 Ave SE in Downtown Calgary, Alberta. This building commonly holds galas and expos. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the centre was used as a mass vaccination clinic, the largest in Alberta. The centre has two buildings. The South Building was opened in 1974, and the North Building opened its doors in 2000. The building was fully renovated in 2000, and received a new fire alarm system that same year. The system is serviced by Viking Fire Protection Inc.

System Specifications

FACP

The buildings are protected by an Edwards EST3 addressable fire alarm system. The system is networked, and the main panel is located in the parkade boiler room, with a subpanel in the main entrance vestibule. The system runs EST’s Signature addressable protocol, and is configured for two stage operation. The system is equipped with voice evacuation. The evacuation signals are as follows: 20BPM Chime in First Stage, 120BPM in general alarm. This system is known for having issues, and is extremely quiet.

Annunciators

There are several Edwards EST3-LCDANN annunciators throughout the facility. The one in the front desk has an EST 3-REMICA mic on it.

Notification Appliances

Most notification appliances are Edwards 965-7A-4RW speaker/strobes (white, ceiling-mount, 4”, 15/75cd). One hallway has Edwards 965-5A-4RW speaker/strobes (white, ceiling-mount, 15cd, 4") on the walls. The North Building hallways have Edwards “Integrity” 202-5A-T remote strobes (red, wall-mount, 15cd) for extra coverage, as well as 965-1A-4RW (white, 4" ceiling mount) speakers for additional sound coverage. The main conference rooms have Edwards “Integrity” 757-7A-SS70W speaker/strobes (white, ceiling-mount, 15/75cd, 70.7V).

All pull stations are EST SIGA-270P addressable two-stage single-action pull stations, most of which are original.

Automatic Detection Devices

There are EST SIGA-PS addressable photoelectric smoke detectors throughout the facility.

Known Activations

At 8:15 PM on Saturday, October 1, 2022, the system was activated. The cause of the alarm was found to have been a pull station in the parkade falsely activated by a homeless person. The system activation was filmed by TwentyThree33, who entered the building with permission from the Calgary Fire Department.
