St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital is a 209-bed acute care hospital located at 154 Lamerchant Rd, St. Johns, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is operated by Eastern Health since 2005. The building was built in 1939 as a 100 bed hospital by the Sisters of Mercy, and was expanded in 1950, 1958, 1962 and finally 1972. The fire alarm system was upgraded in 1989, with a panel replacement in 2012.

System Specifications (1989-present)

FACP

The building is protected by a Simplex 4120 networked fire alarm system. The system is a network of 3 panels which consist of Simplex 4100ES conventional panels, the main node is located in the switchboard office. The panels are equipped with the InfoAlarm Command Center. The system is equipped with voice-evacuation, and is configured for two-stage operation. Each alarm sequence begins with the pre-announce chime twice, followed by a 20BPM 500Hz tone as the alert signal, with automated “Red Alert” announcements with each zone. The alarm signal is a temporal 500Hz beep.
The 4100ES was installed in 2012, replacing a Simplex 4100U (same sequence) which in turn replaced an Edwards 6500 MK II w/EVAC.

FACP Accessories

There is a Simplex 4100-1293 printer module for logging the alarm events.

Notification Appliances

Most notification appliances are Edwards 965-1A-8SW speakers (square, ceiling-mount, 8”, 70V, set to ½ watt)
The stairwells and mechanical rooms have Edwards CSVT-77UCR re-entrant speakers (red, surface-mount, 70V, cone driver).

Initiating Devices

Pull Stations

All pull stations are Edwards 270-GAO conventional two-stage pull stations.

Automatic Detection Devices

Most smoke detectors are Edwards 6250C conventional ionization smoke detectors.
There is one Simplex 2098-9110 conventional ionization smoke detector.
Some areas have Edwards 281C conventional fixed-temperature/rate-of-rise heat detectors.
There are also some Edwards 241 conventional fixed-temperature/rate-of-rise heat detectors left over from the previous system.

EOLs

There are Edwards EOL-P1 end of line resistor plates on all circuits.
