Don Hartman NE Sportsplex is a sports facility located in the Coral Springs neighborhood of Northeast Calgary. It houses two 150-seat, NHL-sized arenas, as well as a large gymnasium. It was built in 1995, and received a fire alarm upgrade last year. The system is (unfortunately) serviced by Johnson Controls.

System Specifications

FACP

The building is protected by a Simplex 4100ES addressable fire alarm system. The panel is located at the main entrance. This panel is equipped with the new Simplex ES touchscreen interface. The panel is not up to code, as it does not have zone annunciation. The system runs Simplex's IDNet addressable protocol, but the coding of the system is unknown.

Notification Appliances

Most notification appliances are Wheelock MBS-G10-24 motor bell/strobes (10" gong, 1.5 candela). In the dressing room hallway, the Wheelock bell broke down, and was replaced with a Simplex 2901-9724 motor bell (10" gong). The strobe assembly remains. In a hallway on the second floor, there is a Potter MBA-6-24 motor bell (6" gong) on a Wheelock RSSP-24MCW-FR strobe plate. All of these were left over from the original system.

Initiating Devices

Pull Stations

All pull stations are Simplex 4099-9004 IDNet addressable single-action pull stations.

Automatic Detection Devices

There are Simplex 4098-9714 IDNet addressable photoelectric smoke detectors throughout the building.

System Specifications (original system)

FACP

The building was protected by a Notifier System 2500 conventional fire alarm system. The panel was located at the main entrance. The system did continuous in alarm. This panel had a custom silver cabinet, and was replaced in 2021 for no reason.

Notification Appliances

Most notification appliances are Wheelock MBS-G10-24 motor bell/strobes (10” gong). One bell failed, and was replaced with a Simplex 2901-9724 motor bell. The strobe plate is still intact, and is wired in series to the bell. In a hallway on the second floor, there is a Potter MBA-6-24 motor bell (6" gong) on a Wheelock RSSP-24MCW-FR strobe plate. These are still in use on the new system.

Initiating Devices

Pull Stations

All pull stations were Notifier NFM-950B conventional single-action “tab” pull stations. These were replaced due to not being addressable.

Automatic Detection Devices

None noticed.
