The Olympic Oval is a multipurpose ice arena located at 288 Collegiate Blvd NW, Calgary, AB. It gets its name from its original purpose, which was to host the 1988 Winter Olympics. It is located on the campus of the University of Calgary, and has a speed skating track, along with 2 enclosed hockey surfaces. It was built in and opened in 1987, and was the first covered speed skating track in North America. Most of the system is original, except for the panel and the strobes installed later. The system is very similar to Kinesiology B.
System Specifications (1987-present)
FACP
The facility is protected by a Simplex 4100ES conventional fire alarm system. The panel is located in the lobby, and was installed in 2021 replacing a Simplex 4100U, which in turn replaced the original Simplex 2120. The system is equipped with voice-evacuation. The alarm pattern is the slow whoop followed by the default message.
Notification Appliances
All audible notification appliances are the original Simplex "LifeAlarm" 2902-9734 speakers (beige, flush-mount).
The second level in the arena has Wheelock RSS-24MCW (red, wall-mount, set to 15cd) remote strobes for visual coverage, installed with the 4100U.
Initiating Devices
Pull Stations
All pull stations are Simplex 2099-9905 conventional bilingual single-action pull stations.
Automatic Detection Devices
None noticed.
Known Activation
January 16, 2012 - false activation. Building evacuated, and campus security ensured building was safe for re-occupancy. Alarm shut off after short while.
May 2013 - smoke detector in electrical room activated by minor smoke from an exhaust fan shorting out. Building was evacuated, and Calgary Fire Department responded, and confirmed everything was OK.
Bonus Information
The Olympic Oval formerly used Simplex 2901-9834 (beige) mechanical horns as door alarms. They were original, but are NOT connected to the fire alarm system. These were uninstalled in 2020, for an unknown reason.
