St. Timothy High School is a junior and senior high school located at 501 Sunset Drive, Cochrane, AB. It is operated by the Calgary Catholic School District. The school was built in 2004, and the fire alarm system was upgraded in 2020; only the pull stations are original.

System Specifications (2020-present)[edit | edit source]

This system took two months to install, starting in May 2020 and ending that summer.

FACP[edit | edit source]

The building is protected by a Kidde VS4 addressable fire alarm system. The panel is located in the caretaker's office. The system runs Kidde's GSA addressable protocol, and the system coding is temporal.

Annunciators[edit | edit source]

There is a Kidde K-RLCD-C LCD annunciator and a K-RLED24 LED annunciator at the entrance, on a rectangular silver metal plate.

Notification Appliances[edit | edit source]

All notification appliances except for one are from Kidde's "Genesis" line of products.

The main notification appliances are Kidde GC-HDVM horn/strobes (white, ceiling-mount, no lettering, set to 30 or 75cd). There is one horn/strobe per classroom, and the library contains three horn/strobes.

Open ceiling areas (the top floor atrium, gymnasium, band/music room and the shop) have Kidde G1R-HDVM horn/strobes (red, wall-mount, no lettering, set to either 15, 75, or 110cd). The gym has four; two of the horn/strobes where the bell/strobes were, but the other two are in new locations.

All washrooms have an Kidde GC-VM remote strobe (white, ceiling-mount, no lettering, set to 75cd).

For exterior notification, there is an Edwards WG4RN-HVMC weatherproof horn/strobe (red, no lettering, set to 60cd) by the tarmac, behind a wire grill.

There is also an Edwards "Integrity" CS405-8A-T weatherproof remote strobe (red, 110cd) by the bike rack that was installed in early 2020 when the QuickStart was still in service; the only notification appliance to remain from the previous system.

Initiating Devices[edit | edit source]

Pull Stations[edit | edit source]

All pull stations are the original EST SIGA-270 addressable pull stations. These were kept from the previous system as they are compatible.

Automatic Detection Devices[edit | edit source]

There are Kidde KI-PD optical addressable smoke detectors throughout the building.

Certain rooms have Kidde KIR-HD addressable 135°F fixed-temperature/rate-of-rise heat detectors. All detectors installed on KI-SB bases.

There are Kidde GSA-SD two-wire photoelectric duct smoke detectors on each air handling unit and behind ceilings. They are connected to Kidde GSA-LED LED indicators.

Modules[edit | edit source]

There are Kidde GSA-CT1 addressable monitor modules supervising the sprinkler system and tamper switches.

There are also Kidde GSA-CR addressable control modules for shutting down the HVAC system and releasing the fire doors, wired to EST 1508-AQN5 magnetic door holders.

There are Kidde GSA-IM isolator modules on the SLC.

EOLs[edit | edit source]

There are Edwards EOL-P1 end-of-line resistors on all sprinkler and signal circuits.

Former System Specifications (2004-2020)[edit | edit source]

Former System Specifications
FACP: EST QuickStart QS1
FACP Location: Custodian's Office
System Type: Single-Stage Addressable
System Line Voltage: 120VAC
NAC Voltage: 24VFWR
System Coding: Temporal
Strobes Synchronized: Yes
Date of last known Upgrade: Feb 2020

Year Installed: 2004
Year Decomissioned: 2020

FACP[edit | edit source]

The building was protected by an EST QuickStart QS1 addressable fire alarm system. The panel was located in the caretaker's office. The system ran EST's Signature addressable protocol, and the system coding was temporal.

This panel was installed in 2016 as an emergency replacement for the original variant, which suffered a CPU failure.

Annunciators[edit | edit source]

There was a QSA-1-S cabinet in the main entrance vestibule, with an EST QS1-CPU-1 CPU and an SL30 card in it.

Notification Appliances[edit | edit source]

Most notification appliances were Edwards MB6-24 motor bells (6" gong) on EST "Integrity" 403-5A-R strobe plates (15cd). These could also be found in the library, the music room, and the changerooms.

The gym and shop had Edwards MB10-24 (10" gong) motor bells on EST "Integrity" 403-5A-R strobe plates due to higher ambient noise levels. There were three in the gym, and two in the shop.

For outdoor notification, there were three Edwards MB6-24 motor bells (6" gong), located at the front near the hill, one by the staff parking lot, and one at the tarmac.

There was also an Edwards CS405-8A-T weatherproof remote strobe (red, 110cd) above the bike rack; this was installed in February 2020 as a deficiency replacement for the original EST one, and is still in use on the current system.

Initiating Devices[edit | edit source]

Pull Stations[edit | edit source]

All pull stations were EST SIGA-270 addressable pull stations. These are still in use on the Kidde system.

Automatic Detection Devices[edit | edit source]

There were EST SIGA-PS addressable photoelectric smoke detectors throughout the building.

Certain rooms such as the electrical room had EST SIGA-HRS addressable 135°F fixed-temperature/rate-of-rise heat detectors.

All detectors were mounted on SIGA-SB bases. Most were original, and some were deficiency replacements over the years.

There were EST SIGA-DH duct detector housings, on the air handling units and above some ceilings, with SIGA-PS addressable photoelectric heads inside them. These were connected to EST SIGA-LED LED indicators.

Modules[edit | edit source]

There were EST SIGA-CT1 addressable monitor modules supervising the sprinkler system and tamper switches.

There were also EST SIGA-CR control modules for shutting down the HVAC system, and releasing the fire doors, wired to Edwards 1508-AQN5 magnetic door holders.

There were EST SIGA-IM isolator modules on the SLC.

EOLs[edit | edit source]

There are Edwards EOL-P1 end-of-line resistors on all sprinkler and signal circuits.

List of known activations[edit | edit source]

September 21, 2020 - alarm at around 9:45 AM, activated by duct detector in air handling unit in gymnasium. Scent of smoke reported in gym and nearby areas prior to alarm. School was evacuated, Cochrane Fire Services responded and the cause was found to be a motor overheating, burning red hot and smoking from the electrical panel outputting 4x the rated current, due to FORTIS working on power. Alarm shut off after 30 minutes.
