The Fairmont Palliser is a luxury historical hotel located at 133 9 Ave SW, Calgary, AB. It is one of Calgary’s oldest and most luxurious hotels, and is owned by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. It was originally built in 1914 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, expanded in 1929, and was extensively renovated in 2000. The fire alarm system was mostly installed during the renovation, but the initiating devices and panels were replaced around 2019.
System Specifications (2000-present)[edit | edit source]
FACP[edit | edit source]
The building is protected by a networked Simplex 4100ES addressable fire alarm system. The panel locations are unknown, however there are several nodes. It replaced a Simplex 4100+ network around 2019. The system runs Simplex’s IDNet addressable protocol, and is configured for two-stage operation. The alert signal coding is 20BPM, and the alarm coding is temporal.
The main panel is also equipped with voice-evacuation. When the microphone is activated, the system silences the bells and the mic feed goes through the speakers.
Notification Appliances[edit | edit source]
Common Areas[edit | edit source]
Most common area notification appliances are Simplex 2901-9723 motor bells (6” gong). Most are mounted remotely, and are mounted on Wheelock RSSP-2415W strobe plates (red, wall-mount, 15cd) in the main lobby, mezzanine foyer, pool area and on some hotel floors. The aforementioned bells are also in ballrooms, mounted behind metal grills to blend in with the room. There are also Wheelock RSS-2415W remote strobes (red, wall-mount, 15cd) in the lobby, mounted on the ceiling for additional coverage. The 12th floor has Simplex 2901-9724 motor bells (10” gong), for unknown reasons.
Guest Rooms[edit | edit source]
Most guest rooms have Edwards 128D-AWC mini horns (white, wall-mount). The Gold rooms do not have horns, but Simplex 2902-9314 speakers (ceiling-mount, 8”, 25V, round) for announcements. Not all guest rooms have a notification appliance.
Voice Communication[edit | edit source]
These speakers are only used to give announcements during a fire alarm.
Most speakers are Simplex 2902-9314 speakers (ceiling mount, 8”, 25V, round). There are also EST “Integrity” 964-1A-8RW speakers (ceiling-mount, 25V, 8”, round) as deficiency replacements.
Initiating Devices[edit | edit source]
Pull Stations[edit | edit source]
All pull stations are Simplex 4099-9004CA addressable two-stage pull stations. These were installed with the 4100ES, replacing 2099-9107C conventional two-stage pull stations.
Automatic Detection Devices[edit | edit source]
There are Simplex 4098-9714 addressable photoelectric smoke detectors throughout the hotel. Some areas have Simplex 4098-9734 addressable fixed/rate-of-rise heat detectors. All detectors are mounted on 4098-9792 bases. There is also a sprinkler system with waterflow detection.
Modules[edit | edit source]
There are Simplex 4090-9001 addressable monitor modules supervising the sprinkler system’s tamper and flow switches.
