The Olympic Oval is a multipurpose ice arena located at 288 Collegiate Blvd NW, Calgary, AB. It gets its name from its original purpose, which was to host the 1988 Winter Olympics. It is located on the campus of the University of Calgary, and has a speed skating track, along with 2 enclosed hockey surfaces. It was built in and opened in 1987, and was the first covered speed skating track in North America. Most of the system is original, except for the panel and the strobes installed later. The system is very similar to Kinesiology B.

System Specifications[edit | edit source]

FACP[edit | edit source]

The building is protected by a Simplex 4100ES conventional fire alarm system. The panel is located next in the main lobby, next to the customer service desk. The evacuation signal is a slow whoop tone, followed by the default Simplex male message. The 4100ES replaced a 4100U in 2019, which in turn replaced the original 2120 in 2007.
The system is part of a campus-wide network.

Notification Appliances[edit | edit source]

All audible notification appliances are Simplex “LifeAlarm” 2902-9734 speakers (beige, wall-mount). The seating bowl has Wheelock RSS-24MCW remote strobes (red, wall-mount) for visual signaling.

Initiating Devices[edit | edit source]

Pull Stations[edit | edit source]

All pull stations are Simplex 2099-9921 conventional single-action pull stations with bilingual lettering.

Automatic Detection Devices[edit | edit source]

None noticed.

EOLs[edit | edit source]

There are Simplex 2081-9040C end of line resistor plates on all circuits.

Message Script[edit | edit source]

Known Activation[edit | edit source]

January 16, 2012 - false activation. Building evacuated, and campus security ensured building was safe for re-occupancy. Alarm shut off after short while.

May 2013 - smoke detector in electrical room activated by minor smoke from an exhaust fan shorting out. Building was evacuated, and Calgary Fire Department responded, and confirmed everything was OK.

Bonus Information[edit | edit source]

The Olympic Oval formerly used Simplex 2901-9834 (beige) mechanical horns as door alarms. They were original, but are NOT connected to the fire alarm system. These were uninstalled in 2020, for an unknown reason.
